Division of Games | University of Utah

Extending interactive computing infrastructure across campus to support interdisciplinary research, instruction, and innovation.

What is RESPAWN?

RESPAWN Partners provides University of Utah units and faculty with sustained access to high-performance computing and immersive systems.

The program redeploys excess or second-generation high-end systems previously used in Division of Games teaching and research — including:

  • High-performance game development PCs

  • VR and AR headsets

  • Specialized input devices

  • Capture and visualization infrastructure

By extending the life of these systems, RESPAWN:

  • Expands access to advanced technology

  • Strengthens cross-campus collaboration

  • Maximizes institutional investment

  • Builds distributed research capacity

The goal: reduce friction for teams that need advanced systems — and help great ideas get back into motion.

Who Can Participate?

RESPAWN is open to:

  • Colleges, divisions, departments, centers, and labs

  • Individual University of Utah faculty members

(Internal University use only.)

What You Receive

  • Long-term, sustained access to advanced computing hardware

  • Systems provisioned with a University-licensed base software configuration

  • Alignment with Division capacity planning and infrastructure strategy

  • Lightweight internal MOU documentation

How It Works

  1. Submit a short description of your research or instructional goals.

  2. The Division reviews availability and aligns equipment access with priorities.

  3. Systems are provisioned with a compliant software configuration.

  4. Your unit coordinates pickup and integrates the equipment into your environment.

Equipment remains in use in support of approved University purposes.
The Division may recall equipment with reasonable notice if priorities require.

Stewardship

Participating units agree to:

  • Use equipment only for University purposes

  • Follow University policies and applicable regulations

  • Operate systems responsibly and securely

  • Remove unit-specific data prior to return

Transportation to and from Division storage locations is the responsibility of the receiving unit.
